Portfolios and Composite Cards: What’s the difference, and how often should I update them?

Many people get confused about the difference between a composite card and a portfolio. Simply explained a composite card is one sheet of about 4-5 photos (including one headshot) of a model. The photos on a composite card will typically be versatile, showing many different looks for the model such as casual, swimsuit, high fashion, etc. The composite card also will include one main headshot of the model, as well information on the models’ measurements and characteristics like height, weight, hair and eye color as well as agency contact information. The composite card is usually used as almost like a “business card” for a model.
A portfolio is a collection of many different photos of a model, and also includes tear sheets from any print work that the model has done. A model’s composite card is typically included in the portfolio. As opposed to a composite card being just one sheet, a portfolio is generally presented in a portfolio case that displays the photos in a book format, with pages that are generally 9 1/2″X12 1/2″ in size.
Both portfolios and composite card photos should reflect the versatility of the model and show their different ranges of photography. The model should include a collection of their best shots from a range of different types of projects. This will show the models range and skill. Adult Composite cards and headshots should be updated no less than once a year. Children’s headshots should be updated more frequently such as every 6 months.
