Reality Televisions Biggest Success Stories

April 6th, 2012 by Jayelle D

reality television celebrities

Since the first episode of “Survivor”, the world has had a love affair with reality television. The seemingly unscripted episodes of reality television made us feel closer to the individuals that were on camera. They were not trained actors and they weren’t always stunningly beautiful people like the celebrities that walk the red carpet. Reality television swept the nation and viewers tuned in to catch every moment.

Although reality television is a guilty pleasure this type of television has added to the success of several unknown individuals and socialites. Some of these reality television stars have become bigger than their original show and have no branded their images to secure their print on the world’s memory.

On September 28, 2004, MTV released a new reality show called “Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County”. The reality show followed the lives of several affluent teenagers residing in Laguna Beach. The young cast revealed their secrets, love lives, and individuals in front of cameras. As with any show, certain individuals stood out. Lauren ‘LC’ Conrad was one such Laguna Beach standout that crossed over from reality television star to fashion designers. She has two fashion lines: LC and Paper Crown, and runs a website “The Beauty Department”. Conrad took her small amount of time on television and made it into an empire.

In March of 2008, Bravo TV released a new set of reality shows that followed the lives of Housewives in the major cities of the U.S. The second one to debut “The Real Housewives of New York” featured a group of women that were entrepreneurs and businesswomen. As an author and chef, Bethenny Frankel stood out amongst the other housewives. She was given a spinoff show “Bethenny Frankel Getting Married?” and remained in the reality television spotlight. In April 2011, she began a new line of Skinnygirl cocktails. Her slender frame and insight on natural foods made her into a health food guru for women.

The most famous “celebutante” and reality television star has to be Kim Kardashian. As the daughter of the high powered attorney Robert Kardashian, she grew up with wealth. In October 2007, E! TV signed her and her family on for a reality show called “Keeping up with the Kardashians”. The show aired for six seasons and she received instant fame by keeping her name in the press, and making her love life an open book. Along with cover model photo shoots and big name endorsements, Kardashian was named the highest earning reality star of 2010. She continues to remain a hot topic on fashion and celebrity blogs. She has solidified her position as a memorable accidental celebrity.

American Idol: Jennifer Lopez vs. Nicki Minaj

                singing career

On June 11, 2002, FOX aired a new reality television singing competition titled “American Idol: The Search for a Superstar”. Since its debut “American Idol” has become one of the most popular shows in the history of American television. The competition provides the opportunity of a singing career to undiscovered talents. It is not as easy for a single mother of two or a struggling college student to get a chance at a singing career. For this reason, “American Idol” gained a huge following and over the past ten seasons, the show has changed the lives of many talented individuals by giving them a chance to break into the singing industry.

Along with reality television scandal, and rags to riches performers, the main attraction of American Idol are the ever-changing celebrity judges. The original panel was comprised of record producer Randy Jackson, television producer Simon Cowell, and 80s pop star Paula Abdul. The trio traveled throughout the states choosing the best of the best for the prize of a singing career with a prominent record label. For eight seasons Abdul was the most kind-hearted judge, but left the show to be replaced by actress and talk show hot Ellen DeGeneres. The new host increased ratings and helped to mix up the shows roster of judges. Unfortunately, DeGeneres and Cowell left the show before the finale of season nine.

On the premier of season ten, two new judges were announced to join Jackson; the legendary Aerosmith front man Steven Tyler and singer-actress Jennifer Lopez would bring fresh opinions to the already successful talent competition. Lopez has also added some fashion to the show by appearing in flattering dresses and statement making ensembles.

During the March 29th, elimination episode of “American Idol”, the featured performing artist was the colorful rap-pop artist Nick Minaj. Her performance of her hit “Starships” increased viewership and lightened the mood of the elimination night. Before leaving the stage Minaj posed a simple question for the judges, “I was hoping maybe I could come back and be a guest judge,” said Minaj. “J-Lo can you scoot over a little bit?” To which Lopez shot back: “I don’t know if there’s enough room for both of us.” Minaj smiled, shrugged her shoulders, and walked off stage. It seems Lopez isn’t all too excited about sharing the judge’s panel seat with another female pop star. Luckily, American Idol is scheduled to run till 2013, so we will have to stay tuned for more hints and updates on upcoming guest judges.

A Closer Look: Kevin Hart

Amongst comedians, standup comedy is a rite of passage before entering the film and television entertainment industry. From Richard Pryor to Ricky Gervais, standup comedy weeds out the truly talented funny men from the short-lived talents.

In America, the roots of standup comedy can be traced all the way back to the vaudeville era of the 1880s. Frank Fray a famous vaudeville performer and comedian was the first ‘master of ceremonies’ for the New York Palace Theater. Fray is credited as the forefather of the 20th century standup comedy style. Since then, nightclubs and lounges have become the breeding ground for aspiring comedians and standup acts.

Standup comedy is literally a one man show. It is intimate and personal because the only barrier between a comic and the audience is opportunity and a microphone. Comedians who try to enter the entertainment industry do not have an easy task; they are forced to attend countless open casting calls, battle scary crowds and hecklers at times, and are usually the last to be contacted by top talent agencies for help snagging paying gigs. What that comic does with that opportunity separates a legendary comedian from a weaker one. Keenan Ivory Wayans, a notable comedy actor, writer, and director once said, “A lot comes from having the experience of doing standup comedy. It allows you to figure out the psychology of an audience; what things are funny and not.”

In the 21st century, standup comedy seemed to come to a slow period, as funny men appeared in film and television, but less on the one-man stage. Right and left, comedy actors such as Dave Chappelle, Louis C.K., and Bernie Mac were getting their own television series, while the standup circuit developed a void. Then, in 2009, one pint-sized comedian made a huge impact on the comedic circuit. Kevin Hart, a former shoes salesman from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, released a standup DVD entitled, ‘I’m a Grown Little Man’. This was Hart’s first recorded standup performance, but previously he had small roles in movies such as ‘Death at a Funeral’, ‘Scary Movie 4’ and ‘Extreme Movie’. Hart had to return to his standup roots to truly skyrocket to the forefront of comedy. Hart’s comedic delivery is unorthodox, but inviting to the audience. “His delivery is part Eddie Murphy confidence and part Bernie Mac aggression, but what he adds is a sense of self-deprecation that makes him relatable and lets the listener know that he never takes himself too seriously.” Hart injects himself and his experiences into each standup act. He makes his comedy personal because life experiences can be shared with anyone. Hart has brought a new vigor into the comedy circuit. His next standup comedy DVD, ‘Seriously Funny’ made big numbers, so much so, that his most recent release ‘Laugh at My Pain’ was released in theaters and broke the box office. He has also scored acting jobs in major films like “Little Fockers” and “Fools Gold”.

Today, Hart is on tour for his fourth standup tour, ‘Let Me Explain’ and promoting an upcoming film based on a book by fellow comedian Steve Harvey. The book, “Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man” was adapted into a film ‘Think Like a Man’. The star-studded cast includes not only Hart, but Michael Ealy, Megan Good, Taraji P. Henson, and Regina Hall. The past four years have been prosperous for Hart, and his contributions to comedy have given us all the joy of laughter. Check out Hart’s comedic style in ‘Think Like a Man’ set to be released on April 20th, 2012 domestically. Also, look out for the release of his standup tour ‘Let Me Explain’ which will hit stores later this year.

Entertainers, for the most part, are outgoing and unafraid when it comes to putting on a show for others. But, there is just something about a camera that causes many fearless performers to feel the nervous fluttering of butterflies in their bellies. If your goal is to become more comfortable in front of the acting camera, whether for acting auditions or acting jobs, the following three tips can do wonders for conquering anxiety.

1. Learn your lines and prepare.

This is one of the most basic bits of advice for actors, but it is one of the least followed. Actors and actresses who hope to combat camera anxiety should practice their lines until they have them fully memorized. In addition, it is a great idea to visualize yourself doing well. This kind of positive thinking can truly transform your outlook and put you at ease.

2. Practice at home.

If the camera makes you very nervous, why not become more comfortable with it at home? Have a family member or friend film you with their phone or any handheld device, and practice until you feel natural in front of the camera.

3. Put your nerves to rest.

Before filming day make sure to wake up early enough to give yourself plenty of time to get ready. Enjoy a healthy breakfast and practice a few times before arriving early to set. Be sure to stay away from caffeine, which can increase your nervous feelings, and instead go for a more soothing drink like chamomile tea. Remember, every performer is not perfect at the first try. Sometimes additional takes are necessary. Be patient with yourself, and you will naturally feel much better.

Audition Tips For Children Actors

Imagine a long day of work watching babies and children scream, cry, and yell. This can be the life of a casting crew when auditions are taking place. Talented children that get chosen for roles never make these mistakes, of course no one is perfect, and every child has off days. Auditions can be hard to come by in these times, but there are a few things you can do to improve your chances of booking work.

Here are some helpful tips for the long awaited audition day:

1. Have a good breakfast

The day of an audition is especially important, so why not start it out perfectly? Cranky kids are often hungry or sleepy, so it is best to cover these bases before casting calls or acting auditions. Make sure your son or daughter gets a good night’s sleep and has a full belly before heading out. Bring snacks and toys to keep them occupied while you wait to be called, and make sure your child is content.

2. Dress to impress

There’s nothing worse than seeing a child with runny eyes, boogies, and mismatched clothing. Keep your son or daughter looking neat before an audition, as this will put his or her best face forward to the casting crew. Many parents choose a variety of their children’s best clothing and allow them to select which outfit they would like to wear.

3. Prepare

Whether your child is singing, acting, or dancing, it is beneficial to have them practice their lines, song or routine before heading out to an audition. Be sure to choose a performance your son or daughter actually likes, so they appear happy while entertaining. The better prepared your child is, the higher his or her chances are of being selected for a part.

How to Have a Lasting Career in Entertainment

Woman's Professional Headshot Photo

The idea of becoming a celebrity is an exciting dream shared by many. Lots of talented actors, singers, and models find work every day, but this does not mean that they will be able to handle the cutthroat industry. Some newcomers find that acclimating to the entertainment world is hard to get used to. Luckily, there are a few pointers beginners can use to stay on top and succeed.
Here are three ways to maintain a lasting career in your field:

1. Be sure of who you are.

Maintaining a sense of self is crucial for success in the entertainment industry. People who are exploring with who they are and what they believe can easily find themselves the victims of peer pressure, which can sometimes lead to experimenting with destructive behaviors.  Take inventory of your values, and commit to living a lifestyle that makes your well-being top priority.

2. Surround yourself with trustworthy people.

Many celebrities learn the hard way that not everyone is a true friend. Often times, new actors and models meet others in the industry, end valuable relationships with people from the past, and find out that they burned bridges with the ones who really supported their career aspirations. It is important for new talent to be aware of who is around them and to be discriminating when it comes to friends. Use your intuition as a great tool for feeling out people, including talent managers and agents.

3. Know what you want, and go after it.

It is easier for beginning actors, singers, and models to feel like they must follow the advice of others. When new to the entertainment industry, talent can feel that it seems best to go with the guidance of people who claim to know what is best, however talent should always take precautionary measures, as well. Newcomers should establish goals and have an idea of where they see their careers heading. Having a sense of what you want will make decisions easier when it comes to choosing between talent agencies, and it will help to forge a path you can be proud of.

How to Choose an Outfit for Your Photo Shoot

November 15th, 2011 by developer

Clothes for a Photo Shoot

Everyone dreams of his or her first chance to show off in front of the camera. For many new models the idea of a photo shoot is exciting and nerve-wracking. Many wonder what to wear and how many outfits to bring. Others are concerned with choosing the right patterns and colors. No matter what your concerns are, always keep in mind that a photo shoot is meant to be fun and beneficial to an actor or model’s career. With a few tips, you will be able to jump in front of the camera with confidence.

Here are four fashion-forward tips for choosing clothes on your next photo shoot:

1. Bring a variety of flattering garments.

How boring would it be if we all wore the same outfit every day? If everyone did that, then we would all look like cartoon characters stuck in time. This concept is no different for your photo shoot. The more unique your outfits are, the better. Always pick styles that flatter your figure, and have others tailored, so they accentuate your best features.

2. Opt for solids, and avoid distracting prints.

Photo shoots are opportunities for you to shine. Though patterns and prints may be all the rage on the runway, they do not belong at a photo shoot that is meant to showcase you. Wild designs will detract from you, and they tend to make photos look less professional than solid colors. Stick to the basics, and also keep colors in mind when matching solid colors to certain background colors as well.

3. Arrive looking your best.

The week before your photo shoot is perfect for eating healthy, taking care of your skin, and giving your hair a little extra TLC. Pamper yourself before a photo shoot, and your body will thank you with beautiful pictures that stand out to talent agencies.

4. Switch your style for each look.

A photo session is the perfect time to showcase your versatility, so choose outfits that illustrate a variety of looks from athletic to corporate, all the way to casual and elegant. Having this diversity will make it easier for industry professionals to picture you in a variety of settings like acting or modeling jobs.

child actor

Acting is an exciting profession. For young children whose imaginations are soaring, the idea of pretending to be a character can feel like more play than work. Although your son or daughter is happy using their imagination and creativity to do a good job, it is important to remember that acting is a business, and though it is fun work, there is no mistaking the importance of memorizing lines–especially in the hopes of impressing leading acting agents in NYC. The great thing about this necessary component to successful acting is that you can make it fun for your child as well.

Here are three great ways to help your child actor learn his or her lines:

1. Creative Games

When it comes to memorization, the more creative you can be the better. Try taking the script and practicing what each character is going to say. Let your child read the lines he or she will be responsible for, and you can take on the parts of the other characters. Talk to your child about emotions, and ask them what feelings their character has. Explain the scene in context, and ask your child how they might feel if that happened to them. Using their creative minds will help them become more comfortable in character, and it will make the lines more memorable.

2. Make a song

Putting words to melody is an easy way to teach your child his or her lines. Just think of songs like “Happy Birthday” and “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” Without a melody, the words would be often forgotten. Try putting a tune to dialogue and your child will always be able to identify what line comes next. However, be sure to practice the lines in scene so your little one doesn’t begin singing on film.

3. Repeat and record

Another great way for your child to memorize his or her lines is through repetition. The more your child hears the scene, the more likely they are to remember it. Go through the scene and record the dialogue of all characters. You can let your child say their lines, or speak in a different voice when their line comes up. This will help their dialogue to stand apart from the rest.

One of the best ways aspiring child actors can gain experience is by attending acting classes for kids; NYC is a leading area with top schools and talent on the east coast.
